Language changes worldwide have a butterfly effect, this is why we should be aware of them.
In the last few weeks, I wrote about the changes in terminology brought about by cultural changes in the last few years. Since what I wrote was linked to an article that mostly discussed changes in the US, a colleague asked me why I posted about it. The following are a few reasons why this kind of change should interest everyone, not just those working with US.
Many of us work globally, and some of our work directly with the US. Because of this, it is important to be aware of and understand cultural changes. Because I have worked with the US market for several years, it is important for me to remain informed about such changes.
Changes in one location can create a trend that affects other locations, so something that might start in the US might be trending elsewhere.
My day-to-day interactions involve a variety of people. Some are employees, some are managers, some are customers, some are located in the US, some in Israel, and others in the EU. Some are from the Finance department, some from Development, and some from HR. In order to effectively communicate, I need to understand whom I'm speaking with and adjust my messaging accordingly.
